Application

Industrial Sludge Dewatering

Dewatering bags for industrial sludge and sediment: how the fabric is chosen from solids and flow data, and why blinding is the real risk.

A dewatering bag is not sized like a product bag. There is no lift weight to design against until the bag is already full of water, and the number that matters is whether the water can leave fast enough while the solids stay in.

Fabric opening size and permeability have to match the solids in your stream. Too tight and the bag blinds over and stops draining; too open and fines leave with the water and become a discharge-quality problem.

Because the bag is filled by pump, the supporting area and the lifting plan have to assume a heavy, wet, variable load. Tell us the solids content, the particle size range, the flow rate and where the drained water has to go, and the fabric selection follows from that.

Application Summary

Dewatering industrial sludge and sediment in geotextile bags: water has to leave, solids have to stay, and the bag is sized by flow and solids content rather than by a lift weight.

Typical Customers & Materials

Water-treatment contractors, dredging and lagoon-cleaning companies, industrial plants with settling ponds, and environmental remediation contractors. The buyer is usually a project engineer who has a solids content figure, a target discharge water quality and a limited site area.

Primary Job

Reduce a sludge stream to a handleable solid on site, so the water can go back to the plant or to treatment and the solids can be removed without tankering the whole volume.

Operating Process

  • Filling
  • Lifting
  • Storage & Transport
  • Discharge

Operating Process Notes

The bag is usually laid on a prepared, sometimes lined, drainage area and filled by pump over hours or days. Once drained, it is lifted by plant or crane and moved to a drying or disposal area. Discharge is normally the whole bag - the bag and its contents leave the site together.

Key Risks

  • Dewatering
  • Leakage
  • Overload
  • UV Exposure
  • Abrasion

Key Risks - Additional Notes

The controlling risk is dewatering performance: fabric opening size and permeability have to match the solids in the stream, or the bag blinds over and stops draining. Fines escaping with the water are a discharge-quality problem, not a bag-strength problem. Because the bag is filled by pump, its weight is not known until it is full, so the supporting area and lifting plan have to assume a heavy, wet, variable load. Outdoor exposure for weeks to months makes UV stabilisation essential, and the bag has to survive being dragged once it is solid.

Selection Notes

Tell us the solids content, the particle size range and the flow rate, and the fabric is chosen from those - not from a bag size. If the site has limited area, the plan is usually more bags at a smaller diameter rather than fewer large ones. Where the drained water goes back to a treatment plant, agree the expected discharge quality before the bags are ordered, because that is what the fabric selection is really balancing.

Scope & Limitations

This page covers geotextile dewatering bags for sludge and sediment. It does not design the containment area, does not set discharge consent limits, and does not replace the customer's own permit and water-quality obligations. Performance is confirmed per project against the customer's material.

Information Required

  • Solids content and particle size Required

Percentage solids and the particle size range in the sludge, which decide the fabric opening size.

  • Flow rate and filling duration Required

How fast the material is pumped in, and whether filling runs continuously or in shifts.

  • Target discharge water quality Required

What the drained water has to meet before it goes back to the plant or to treatment.

  • Site area and supporting surface Required

The prepared area available, the surface it sits on, and whether a liner is used underneath.

  • Lifting and removal plan

How the drained bag is lifted and where it goes, since the bag leaves with its contents.

  • Exposure duration

How many weeks or months the bag sits outside before removal.
